Nuclear Medicine

Overview

Welcome to the Mouwasat Hospital Nuclear Medicine Department

At Mouwasat Hospital, our Nuclear Medicine Department utilizes the power of safe, small amounts of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose & treat a wide range of medical conditions. Our team of highly skilled nuclear medicine physicians, technologists & support staff provides advanced imaging & therapeutic procedures with a focus on accuracy, safety & patient comfort.

Nuclear medicine offers a unique perspective by assessing organ function & cellular activity, often detecting diseases in their early stages, well before structural changes are visible on other imaging modalities like X-ray, CT, or MRI. Our patient-centered approach ensures personalized care & the use of the most appropriate techniques for your specific needs.

Cases treated by Nuclear Medicine

Our department manages a broad spectrum of cases, including:
  • Bone Scans: Detecting fractures, infections, arthritis & the spread of cancer to the bones.
  • Cardiac Scans:
    • Myocardial Perfusion Imaging: Assessing blood flow to the heart muscle, identifying areas of ischemia or infarction.
    • MUGA Scan (Multigated Acquisition Scan): Evaluating heart function & ejection fraction.
  • Renal Scans: Assessing kidney function, blood flow & identifying obstructions or reflux.
  • Lung Scans:
    • Ventilation-Perfusion (V/Q) Scans: Diagnosing pulmonary embolism & evaluating lung function.
  • Thyroid Scans: Evaluating thyroid size, shape & function, & detecting nodules or hyperthyroidism.
  • Parathyroid Scans: Locating overactive parathyroid glands.
  • Brain Scans: Assessing blood flow, brain death & certain neurological conditions.
  • Hepatobiliary Scans (HIDA Scan): Evaluating the function of the liver, gallbladder & bile ducts.
  • Gastric Emptying Studies: Assessing the rate at which food empties from the stomach.
  • Infection Imaging (Gallium Scan, White Blood Cell Scan): Locating areas of infection or inflammation in the body.
  • Lymphoscintigraphy: Mapping lymph nodes for sentinel node biopsy in cancer staging & evaluating lymphedema.
  • PET/CT Scans (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography): Combining functional (PET) & anatomical (CT) imaging for the diagnosis, staging & monitoring of various cancers, neurological disorders & cardiac conditions. We manage a wide range of oncological cases with PET/CT, including but not limited to:
    • Lung Cancer
    • Lymphoma
    • Melanoma
    • Colorectal Cancer
    • Head & Neck Cancers
    • Breast Cancer
    • Esophageal & Gastric Cancers
    • Neuroendocrine Tumors
  • Radioiodine Therapy (I-131):
    • Treatment of Hyperthyroidism (Graves' Disease, toxic multinodular goiter).
    • Treatment of Thyroid Cancer (post-thyroidectomy ablation & treatment of metastatic disease).
  • Palliation of Bone Pain from Metastatic Cancer (Samarium-153, Strontium-89): Relieving pain in patients with widespread bone metastases.
  • Radioembolization (Y-90): Targeted radiation therapy for liver tumors.
  • Radionuclide Therapy for Neuroendocrine Tumors (PRRT - Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy): Using radiolabeled peptides to target & destroy neuroendocrine cancer cells.
  • Intra-articular Radionuclide Therapy (Radiosynovectomy): Treating persistent joint inflammation (synovitis) in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
