Welcome to the Mouwasat Hospital Phoniatrics Department 

At Mouwasat Hospital, our Phoniatrics Department provides comprehensive & specialized care for individuals of all ages experiencing disorders of voice, speech, language & swallowing. Our multidisciplinary team of highly skilled phoniatricians (voice & swallowing specialists), speech-language pathologists, audiologists & support staff works collaboratively to diagnose, treat & manage a wide range of communication & swallowing difficulties. We utilize the latest diagnostic tools & evidence-based therapeutic techniques to help our patients achieve optimal communication & safe swallowing.

Our department manages a broad spectrum of phoniatric cases, including:
  • Hoarseness: Persistent or intermittent roughness, breathiness or strain in the voice. 
  • Vocal Fatigue: Voice weakening or discomfort with prolonged use. 
  • Laryngitis: Inflammation of the vocal cords.    
  • Vocal Cord Nodules, Polyps & Cysts: Benign growths on the vocal cords.    
  • Vocal Cord Paralysis: Weakness or immobility of one or both vocal cords.    
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia: Neurological voice disorder causing involuntary spasms of the vocal cords. 
  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD): Voice disorder caused by excessive muscle tension in the neck & larynx.    
  • Puberphonia (Functional High-Pitched Voice): Persistence of a high-pitched voice beyond puberty.    
  • Voice Changes related to Medical Conditions: Parkinson's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc. 
  • Dysarthria: Speech disorder caused by muscle weakness or incoordination due to neurological conditions.    
  • Apraxia of Speech: Motor speech disorder affecting the ability to plan & program the movements needed for speech.    
  • Stuttering (Fluency Disorder): Repetitions, prolongations or blocks in speech.    
  • Articulation and Phonological Disorders: Difficulties producing speech sounds correctly. 
  • Speech Delays: Slower than typical development of speech sounds.  
  • Aphasia: Language disorder resulting from stroke or brain injury, affecting the ability to understand & express language.    
  • Language Delay: Slower than typical development of language skills (understanding & using words & sentences).    
  • Specific Language Impairment (SLI): Difficulties with language development despite typical cognitive abilities. 
  • Difficulty Swallowing Solids and/or Liquids: Coughing, choking, or food/liquid getting stuck.    
  • Painful Swallowing (Odynophagia). 
  • Silent Aspiration: Food or liquid entering the airway without a cough reflex.    
  • Swallowing Difficulties related to Medical Conditions: Stroke, head injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS, head & neck cancer, etc. 
  • Pediatric Feeding & Swallowing Disorders: Difficulties with feeding & swallowing in infants & children. 
  • Hypernasality: Excessive nasal resonance in speech.    
  • Hyponasality: Reduced nasal resonance in speech (sounding "stuffy"). 
  • Resonance Disorders related to Cleft Palate or other craniofacial anomalies.
