In a significant medical achievement that reinforces Al-Mouwasat Hospital’s position as a leading center for advanced healthcare, the hospital announced the successful completion of its first robotic surgery for radical gallbladder tumor removal and lymph node dissection for a 50-year-old female patient.

The surgery was led by Dr. Shadi Al-Shammari, Consultant of General Surgery and Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Oncology Surgery, and Dr. Sami Al-Asari, Consultant of General Surgery, Obesity, and Colorectal Surgery. The patient had advanced gallbladder cancer and had undergone chemotherapy and immunotherapy, which significantly reduced the tumor size and improved the chances of surgical success. The procedure was completed successfully without any notable complications.

This achievement marks an important milestone in the field of robotic surgery in the region, highlighting Al-Mouwasat Hospital’s commitment to adopting the latest global medical technologies. The hospital continues to provide the highest standard of patient care, reducing complications, enhancing recovery speed, and

Al Khobar – The medical team at Al Mouwasat Hospital in Al Khobar successfully performed a delicate robotic surgery to correct a rare congenital deformity in the renal pelvis for a patient who was suffering from severe pain due to a significant narrowing at the upper part of the right ureter.

The medical team explained that the patient had a congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of an additional renal artery compressing the upper section of the right ureter from the outside, causing severe obstruction that prevented normal urine flow and led to dilation and swelling of the renal pelvis. This condition resulted in recurrent severe pain and renal colic.

After conducting the necessary medical examinations, the surgical team decided to intervene using robotic-assisted technology. The procedure involved removing the narrowing at the upper ureter, repositioning the additional renal artery, and creating a new connection between the ureter and the renal pelvis—all performed with advanced robotic surgical precision.

The operation lasted approximately an hour and a half and, by the grace of God, was completed successfully without any complications, with minimal bleeding during the procedure. The patient was discharged from the hospital in good health and a stable condition.

This achievement highlights the high level of expertise of the medical team at Al Mouwasat Hospital and the advanced capabilities of robotic surgery in providing precise and safe solutions for complex medical cases.

Building on the repeated successes of the Urology Department at Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar, the medical team, under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Khasheem, Consultant of Urological Surgery, received a patient with a rare, unusually large tumor in the left adrenal gland, measuring approximately 15 cm — considered one of the largest of its type worldwide.

The patient was referred from Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif after consultation with Dr. Ahmed Khasheem at Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar, who confirmed that the surgery could be safely performed using robotic-assisted surgery.

Comprehensive preoperative tests confirmed that the tumor had not spread to any other part of the body. Dr. Ahmed Khasheem performed a complete robotic-assisted tumor removal, which took approximately three hours and was completed without any complications, despite the tumor's rarity and surgical complexity. The patient was discharged in good health after four days.

Pathology examination confirmed that the adrenal gland was affected by a rare type of tumor with an incidence rate of less than 1% globally. Thanks to the precise and swift removal of the tumor without any rupture, the patient will not require additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
