A resident recovered from near-complete paralysis after enduring over two months of suffering thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam.

The male patient, in his fifties, was initially paralyzed and unable to move, leading him to be admitted to a major hospital in the region. An MRI scan revealed a large tumor at the base of the central skull, extending to its rear, causing pressure on the brainstem. This pressure resulted in ventricular hydrocephalus and limb paralysis. The hospital that initially treated him only placed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to drain cerebrospinal fluid without addressing the tumor due to its complex location, size, and spread.

After almost two months with the patient bedridden, the company he worked for made extensive efforts to seek other hospitals that could provide the necessary care. However, many hospitals in the region refused to accept the case due to its complexity.

The company then expanded its search to hospitals in Riyadh, but no private hospital agreed to take on the case. Finally, Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, confident in its capabilities and medical expertise, accepted the patient, reassuring his company that they were fully prepared to offer the highest levels of medical care, especially in complex neurosurgery cases.

Upon arrival, the patient underwent a clinical examination confirming his paralysis and full dependence on a urinary catheter. A navigational MRI revealed the tumor’s pressure on the brainstem and cranial nerves, and its proximity to critical blood vessels. The treating physician explained the comprehensive treatment plan to the company doctor, including that if the tumor was fully removed, the drainage tube would no longer be needed.

The surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr. Sultan Al-Saiari, Consultant Neurosurgeon. The operation lasted approximately 12 hours, during which the Anesthesia Department, led by Dr. Wael, played a crucial role in maintaining the patient’s stability under anesthesia. This stability contributed positively to the patient’s vital signs, allowing the operation to proceed smoothly without complications, despite previous surgical interventions.

The surgery was completed successfully, the tumor was fully removed, and the drainage tube was no longer required. The patient was transferred to the adult neurological ICU after awakening.

Once the patient’s condition stabilized in the ICU, an MRI confirmed the complete removal of the tumor. The patient began to regain movement in his limbs, significantly lifting his spirits, validating the meticulous surgical plan.

In recognition of this success, the company's director and other administrators visited Al-Mouwasat Hospital's senior management to express their gratitude to the hospital’s staff and medical teams overseeing the patient’s care.

The patient remains in the hospital under the follow-up care of related departments, including the rehabilitation and physical therapy units. He is expected to return to his normal life and resume work following physical therapy.

It is worth noting that performing such complex procedures in neurosurgery requires highly skilled surgeons and advanced technology to achieve the desired outcomes. This aligns with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's vision of recruiting top talents in specialized medical fields and providing the latest medical technologies and equipment.

Jubail - Mouwasat Hospital

A new historical medical milestone has been achieved at Mouwasat Hospital in Jubail by diagnosing and successfully treating the first confirmed case of pulmonary paragonimiasis in Saudi Arabia. This rare parasitic disease primarily affects the lungs. Remarkably, this case is also the first documented worldwide where the infection caused a scrotal abscess, ultimately requiring the removal of one testicle.

Case Details

The patient, a 41-year-old Filipino male, presented to the emergency department with persistent respiratory symptoms lasting several weeks. Initial imaging revealed lung infections resembling tuberculosis, but tests ruled out TB.

Thanks to the hospital’s advanced diagnostic capabilities and the expertise of its medical team, specialized sample analysis detected parasitic eggs, leading to an accurate diagnosis. Further examinations uncovered a rare complication, a scrotal abscess, which was surgically removed in a successful procedure.

Medical Team

The case was managed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Salah Ahmed – Consultant in Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, and Tropical Medicine; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and the American College of Chest Physicians, With the participation of a select group of specialised doctors:

  • Dr. Randa Ahmed – Consultant Pulmonologist
  • Dr. Mohamed El-Deeb – Consultant in Critical Care
  • Dr. Mahmoud Hassan – Consultant Urologist
  • Dr. Nagwa Shaheen – Parasitology Specialist

Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Khobar continues to lead in advanced robotic surgical procedures. The medical team, led by Dr. Sami Al-Asari – Consultant in Robotic Surgery and Colorectal Tumors, successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a large tumor from the right colon of a patient in his thirties using robotic surgery technology.

Case Details

The patient came with chronic bleeding and low hemoglobin levels. After comprehensive diagnostic tests, including imaging and endoscopy, a tumor was detected in the right colon near the liver, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

The procedure was carried out using the robotic surgical system, which enabled precise removal of the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes from their roots while preserving healthy tissues. This advanced technique significantly reduced pain—by up to 10 times compared to traditional or laparoscopic surgeries—and accelerated recovery time.

Post-Surgery Outcome

The patient was discharged in excellent health after a smooth recovery with no complications, reflecting the high level of expertise and advanced technology available at Mouwasat Hospital.

Commitment to Excellence

This achievement underscores Mouwasat Hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare using the latest medical technologies.
