Thankfully the Interventional Radiology and Cerebral Catheterization team, in cooperation with the Neurosurgery team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, succeeded to save the life of a young man in his late twenties who was suffering from severe bleeding in the brain due to the bursting of an arteriovenous link of the third degree in the posterior cerebral artery.

A patient in his late twenties arrived at the emergency room at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, and he suffered from severe headache and a deterioration in the degree of consciousness, where the medical team examined the young man immediately after receiving the case and carried out the necessary medical examinations, as the CT scan showed the presence of severe bleeding in the brain under the arachnoid mater and intracerebral ventricles.

The neurosurgery team, the interventional radiology team, the brain catheterization and the anesthesia team were immediately called while the patient was prepared were Dr. Sherif Al-Mekkawi, a consultant neurosurgeon, installed a tube to drain the bleeding from within the ventricles of the brain surgically, then the patient was transferred to the catheterization room. The room is equipped with the latest global technologies, to make an exploratory diagnostic catheter on the arteries of the brain to find out the cause of bleeding to save the life of the patient. For this aim Dr.Ahmed Al-Taher, a consultant of interventional radiology and brain catheterization, made an arterial imaging that showed that the cause of the bleeding is the presence of an arterial and venous link between the arteries and veins of the posterior cerebrum of the third degree, and finally the bleeding joint was completely closed by means of ultrafine catheters and coagulants under general anesthesia, without any complications.

Thankfully the patient recovered, under the care of the intensive care unit team. He was fully recovered and left the hospital after a few days, fully conscious and returned back to his normal life.

The case is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins of the brain, which leads to high blood pressure inside the veins which causes them to burst, which leads to the occurrence of brain hemorrhage. The arteriovenous connections in the brain are considered one of the rare pathological cases, as they affect one to two persons for every half a million people, and they also require high efficiency and great experience to accurately diagnose and treat them in the most appropriate way for each patient, and this is what Mouwasat seeks to achieve by bringing in the latest global technologies related to this field.

Jubail - Mouwasat Hospital

A new historical medical milestone has been achieved at Mouwasat Hospital in Jubail by diagnosing and successfully treating the first confirmed case of pulmonary paragonimiasis in Saudi Arabia. This rare parasitic disease primarily affects the lungs. Remarkably, this case is also the first documented worldwide where the infection caused a scrotal abscess, ultimately requiring the removal of one testicle.

Thanks to the hospital’s advanced diagnostic capabilities and the expertise of its medical team, specialized sample analysis detected parasitic eggs, leading to an accurate diagnosis. Further examinations uncovered a rare complication, a scrotal abscess, which was surgically removed in a successful procedure.

Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Khobar continues to lead in advanced robotic surgical procedures. The medical team, led by Dr. Sami Al-Asari – Consultant in Robotic Surgery and Colorectal Tumors, successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a large tumor from the right colon of a patient in his thirties using robotic surgery technology.

Case Details

The patient came with chronic bleeding and low hemoglobin levels. After comprehensive diagnostic tests, including imaging and endoscopy, a tumor was detected in the right colon near the liver, requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

The procedure was carried out using the robotic surgical system, which enabled precise removal of the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes from their roots while preserving healthy tissues. This advanced technique significantly reduced pain—by up to 10 times compared to traditional or laparoscopic surgeries—and accelerated recovery time.
