A rare medical case, a one-year-old girl arrived at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam who had been suffering from a continuous cough for a month. Which confirmed the existence of two magnets, one stuck in the upper part of the esophagus and the other stuck in the windpipe.

The child was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit, and the medical team consisting of Dr. Ihab Zureikat, consultant of pediatric digestive system, Dr. Therese Bushra, consultant chest diseases and pediatric endoscopy, and children intensive care consultant and their assistants, where a treatment plan was created to takeout the two pieces.

It was decided to takeput the first piece of the trachea as a first stage by the consultant of thoracic diseases and pediatric binoculars, and then the second piece of the esophagus to be extracted by Dr. Ihab Zureikat, carrying out a simple operation to close of the existing fistula without the need for any surgical intervention, and with God’s held the operation was a success.

On the fifth day of the endoscopy, the necessary x-rays were made for the child, which confirmed that the fistula had healed completely.

Thankfully girl had recovered completely, performing the necessary tests, and she was discharged in full health.

A new historical medical milestone has been achieved at Mouwasat Hospital in Jubail by diagnosing and successfully treating the first confirmed case of pulmonary paragonimiasis in Saudi Arabia. This rare parasitic disease primarily affects the lungs. Remarkably, this case is also the first documented worldwide where the infection caused a scrotal abscess, ultimately requiring the removal of one testicle. 

Case Details 

The patient, a 41-year-old Filipino male, presented to the emergency department with persistent respiratory symptoms lasting several weeks. Initial imaging revealed lung infections resembling tuberculosis, but tests ruled out TB. 

Thanks to the hospital’s advanced diagnostic capabilities and the expertise of its medical team, specialized sample analysis detected parasitic eggs, leading to an accurate diagnosis. Further examinations uncovered a rare complication, a scrotal abscess, which was surgically removed in a successful procedure.
